This demanding tour at the foot of Maddalene Group goes up from Rumo to Passo Castrin, and then on into Alto Adige along the ridges of Monte Ozol, and then back to Rumo.
Whoever goes up and along the ridges of the Maddalene Group from Rumo immediately understands what it is all about: almost immediately one is faced with a really steep climb. From a distance the mountain range with its soft and green foothills presents itself in an endearing and gentle way, butht eclimbs in the core of the mountains themselves are extremely demanding. In consequence it is no bad thing to start by taking a secondary asphalted road which goes from Corte Inferiore to Proves and oits district of Matzlaun. From here one can choose to continue on the less steep main road in the direction of Val d’Ultimo or fce the steep alternative which goes up to the malghe of Maddalene. Choosingthis second option one is later repaid when coming back fdown and passing by the cosy ad welcoming Malga Kessel Bassa, Malga Revò and Malga Cloz, positioned as they are in a spectacular location with the most beautiful of panoramas: the Dolomites of Brenta, the peaks of the Maddalene Group and of Val di Non amaze. Add to the views the warm welcome and excleent cuisine and satisfaction is guaranteed. Once Passo Castrin is reached one comes to the main road which leads to the nearby Val d’Ultimo and then there is the dirt road called “Neuer Weg” which on the territory of Alto Adige brings one to Passo di Brez, and from which one can come back down to the village of Lauregno and then on back to Rumo.
The path which connects Malga Kessel al Passo Castrin is rich in didactic content in that it has a number of interesting and informative boards which explain the life and the traditions up on the Alpine pastures and near the linguistic borders between the borders of Trento and Bolzano. It is certainly worthwhile to stop and read the particular explanations and so to understand more about the area you are crossing.
