The dictionary definition of “ephemeral” is “lasting only one day”. In reality, it relates more generally to something short-lived: a plant’s flowers, the lifespan of an insect. And a lake? Can a lake be ephemeral? In this case, yes! These ephemeral lakes appear every spring, giving new life to a huge swathe of stony and desert-like ground called Glare, a boulder field created around 700 years ago by a gigantic landslide on Monte Corno. On hot days, as the snow melts, some of the rocky basins fill up for short periods with water from the limestone bedrock which is incredibly clear. The result is 2 or 3 little lakes (it depends on the time of the season and how much snow fell in the previous winter), with incredibly clear turquoise waters that will leave you wide-eyed in amazement. Especially as nature only treats us to this spectacle for a very short period of time! If you miss it, you will have to wait until next spring!
