The high mountain pastures are where you find the malghe, the traditional Alpine diaries. For me, these summer pastures are my second home.
From the middle of June to mid-September, I leave everything behind and head up there, where the air is that much clearer. Life in an Alpine dairy is hard, working from dawn to dusk, milking cows, making cheese, looking after the animals. But living in such a place is above all a blessing: the opportunity to find yourself in the calm of the mountains.
Want to come meet me? You may find the climb tiring if you legs aren’t used to it like mine are but, believe me, the sights that await you at the top will make all your efforts worthwhile!
There you will find vast green pastures, cool forests full of mushrooms and all soundtracked by the gentle background tinkling of cowbells. And then there is my wife. Ready to entice you with the best of our cuisine. Did you know that everything tastes better in the mountains? The cheese tastes of grass and wild flowers, the polenta bubbles away in the pot and the warm tempting desserts lie in wait, made from fruits of the forest and freshly laid eggs. Bring your children too! I will teach them how to milk a cow, using with a bucket, a stool and a pair of Wellington boots. Just remember though that these are not places where you can be picky!
Come on up, I’m waiting for you!
