Castel Thun was home to one of the most powerful feudal families in the region. Thanks to its beauty and importance, it still dominates today over all of the other stately homes and castles in Trentino and the Val di Non. A reflection of the noble family’s many centuries of dominance in the valley, a testament to periods of glory and decline, the castle stands on higher ground just outside the village of Vigo di Ton. Situated on a hill, in a panoramic position overlooking the whole Val di Non, it is surrounded by a complex system of fortifications comprising towers, walls, bastions, allures and moats dating back to the 1500s.
Its vast interior houses a succession of rooms, which still boast their luxurious original furnishings and an interesting family collection of paintings. The most valuable and interesting room is the 16th century Stanza del Vescovo, the bishop’s room, which is fully panelled with mountain pine.
In 1992, Castel Thun was acquired by the Trentino regional government and, after a thorough and painstaking restoration, it was reopened to the public in 2010. A rare example of a furnished stately home, Castel Thun still retains an outstanding collection of art, built up over many centuries. The site is part of the region’s network of castles.
